WP Amateur sees locals lift trophies

Milnerton Golf ClubThe Western Province Amateur was held in windy conditions at Milnerton Golf Club last week and saw Western Province players come first and second in both the Stroke Play and Match Play sections of the event.

Cameron Johnston won his second successive amateur event when he lifted the Stroke Play title on an impressive 6 under par total. He was followed into second place by fellow Western Province Inter-Provincial teammate from 2007, Adrian Ford.

Ford was trailing by one shot heading down the last attempted to reach the green in two only to find the water and record an 8 to Johnston’s 5. This left Ford in 2nd place on 2 under 286, 2 shots ahead of the ever steady Dylan Frittelli.

Aaron Russel (also from WP) finished 4th in the Stroke Play and then made the Match Play final against Justin Turner, Russel’s fellow teammate from the WP U/23 team the week before.

Turner had a tough road to the final with wins over Jake Redman, Dean O’Riley, Adrian Ford and Dylan Frittelli before facing Russel in the 36 hole final. The final was a closely contested affair but Turner eventually came out tops with a 3/2 victory to clinch the biggest title of his amateur career to date.
