Williams wins second 2011 provincial championship

Kim Williams picked up her second 2011 provincial stroke play championship trophy when she carded a one-under par 145 to win the Border Championships at East London Golf Club yesterday. Four strokes back on 149 were four players who tied in the runner-up position – Tiffany Avern-Taplin, Bertine Strauss, Iliska Verwey and Lara Weinstein.

The 43rd Border Ladies Open Championship, sponsored by Hemingways, was played in typical East London conditions on Sunday 27 February. After a relatively calm but hot morning, the wind came up for the afternoon round, and shifted from easterly to westerly, challenging most of the players.

Kim Williams and Tiffany Avern-Taplin played great golf to card one-under 72 in the morning round, but while Kim held on with a level par 73 to finish on 145, Tiffany dropped three strokes tosign for and a share of the runner-up prize. Iliska Verwey, after 77 in the morning came back with a one-under 72 to join the runner-up group.
