Western Province take up challenge at Pick n Pay IPT 2012

The morning foursomes gave Western Province A a commanding lead with this team winning all three matches. The excitement was palpable in the clubhouse prior to the start of the singles, as a major upset was a distinct possibility. However, Gauteng North A pulled out all the stops by winning the required 5 out of 6 singles matches to win. Western Province Captain, Vanessa Smith took Kim Williams to the 18th when it all came down to one putt.

Gauteng A took the lead against Ekurhuleni by winning all their foursomes matches. Ekurhuleni managed to halve the singles in the afternoon, but this was not enough. Lara Weinstein from Gauteng beat form player, Bonita Bredenhann 4 & 3.

Southern Cape, who took the promotion after winning the B Inter-Provincial at George last year, have struggled to secure a single point in this year’s tournament. Winning one foursomes match in the morning against KwaZulu Natal, they needed to win four of their singles matches. However, KwaZulu Natal held them at bay, finishing with an overall result of 6 to 3.

Boland were disappointed not to qualify in Section 1, but have continued to make up for this by leading Section 2 after today’s play. They took all three foursomes matches, but North West came back fighting in the afternoon. Boland managed to win 3 and halve won of their matches, giving them an overall win.

Gauteng North B and Eastern Cape were all square going into the afternoon singles matches, but Gauteng North proved too strong for the visitors. The other two matches in this Section of the B Inter-Provincial were played between Mpumalanga and Gauteng B. Mpumalanga overcame a 2 – 0 deficit after the foursomes, by winning 3 of their singles matches. This resulted in an overall draw between the two teams.

In Section 2, Western Province B played Border, halving the morning foursomes. The afternoon saw Western Province win 3 singles and halve one match, which resulted in them taking the lead in this Section. Free State & Northern Cape are one point behind them after halving their matches against Limpopo.
