10 April 2019 – Central Gauteng’s Seniors and Super Seniors top the logs at the halfway mark, but their Western Province counterparts made a serious statement of intent on day 2 of the South African Senior A-Division Inter-Provincial Tournament at Wingate Park Country Club.

SENIORS
After double success on day one, Central Gauteng kept their title defence on track with another double hit on Wednesday, although the team was penalised alongside its duel opponents when some players continued playing despite a weather suspension due to dangerous conditions.

Nonetheless, the Lions scored big with an 8.5 – 2.5 win against North West, but was made to work by Southern Cape to eke out a 6 – 5 result.

The defending champions lead the standings on eight points with 31.5 game points in hand.

KwaZulu-Natal, with a loss and a 9 – 3 win against Border, remained in second place but trail Central Gauteng by 2 points and 3 game points.

Western Province, meanwhile, went 3-for-3 after their first round win against Southern Cape to move to third on six points in the standings. The side also pushed their games tally to 25 at the halfway mark with victories over KwaZulu-Natal and Border.

Western Province was on the back foot against KwaZulu-Natal after losing three games in the foursomes, but the side went on the rampage in the singles to win seven games, with only Japie Koopman coming up short and losing 2&1 to Guy O’Connor.

Western Province led their foursomes against Border 3 – 1 and Marius Lourens (5&4), Craig Poulton (4&3) and Jonathan Bernard (4&2) kept the side on a winning track.

Julian Visser (3&2), Brian Mampies (2&1), Giles Buchanan (2-up) and James Dougan (1-up) kept the scoreboard ticking over and Koopman halved against Norman Phillips to close out a 9.5 – 2.5 result.

Western Province and Southern Cape tied the morning session, but Henry Trevena beat Neil Abrahamse 4&3 to give Western Province an early boost in the singles. Richard Booker lost 1-down to Solly Rautenbach, but Herman September countered for Western Province when he defeated Bertus Smit 1-up. The first game between Hamish Longmore and Southern Cape’s Anton Nel went the distance and ended all square.
