Western Province strengthen grip on Inter Provincial
Western Province started day two of the South African Inter Provincial tournament at the Hermanus Golf Club by shutting out Ekurhuleni in the morning foursomes play to strengthen their hold at the top of the A section.
After not losing a singles match in their opening A section match against Central Gauteng the day before, Western Province took advantage of high winds and looming rain to win 4-0, with only Francois Olivier and Gregg Upton being run close as they defeated Ramon Rahme and Rowan du Preez on the last hole.
Gauteng North also didn’t lose a match on the second morning, sharing just one pairing when Kenny Goosen and JC Nel halved with Free State and Northern Cape’s Deane Burmester and Louis Calitz.
Defending champions Boland were held to 2-2 in the foursomes, making the gap to Western Province a little tougher to bridge – even though it’s early days in the five-day event.
In B section play, KwaZulu-Natal bested North West Province 2 ½ – 1 ½, with Thomas Lovett and Cobus Oosthuizen getting the invaluable half against Peter Cooper and JP Lombard on the final 161-metre hole with a par three in the swirling wind.
Mpumalanga led Border 3-1, and Eastern Provice was 3-1 ahead against Limpopo in the other B section matches.
