15 October 2023 – GolfRSA will be launching the popular GolfSixes League at golf clubs across South Africa in 2024, but the shorter, fun and fast-paced version aimed at drawing beginners to the game is already drawing a huge fan club.

“So far, nearly 50 youngsters attended our activation days at Modderfontein Golf Club and Ruimsig Country Club, and there is no doubt that this shorter and fun concept was hugely popular among the youngsters and their parents,” said GolfRSA’s Michael Johnston. “Most youngsters and beginners are eager to progress from the driving range to the course and the format of GolfSixes lends itself perfectly to that experience.

“We set up a temporary course comprising of six holes, roughly the size of a football pitch, and the players are paired up in teams in two. They play a Texas Scramble format, so both players hit their shots, then they select the better position of the two after each shot and play on from there.

“At Modderfontein, we had a large group from the South African Golf Development Board’s grassroots level programme in Ekurhuleni and Gauteng, as well as learners from nearby schools. At both venues, we also had some juniors who play on the US Kids and SA Kids circuits. ”

Many of them had never played on a golf course and most of them had never played golf in a team format. It was delightful to see how much they embraced it and enjoyed the experience. The concept is novel, and the feedback was very positive. The parents also got involved doing scorecard duties, and they enjoyed the fact that it didn’t take long at all.

“We loved seeing the kids’ faces light up when they all received medals for participating and the inter-action between all the kids after the competition. It was encouraging to hear the positive feedback and to know that we’ve won a lot of new fans for golf.”

GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn explained that the GolfSixes League initiative started as a small pilot project in 2017 in the United Kingdom but has since evolved into a game-changer.

“As new young golfers, parents and clubs saw the value of the fun, team-based format, GolfSixes League has taken flight in nine countries,” Hepburn said. “The GolfSixes League enables beginners to progress from using driving ranges or practice facilities to playing golf in teams of six over six holes using a two-person scramble format on courses adapted to their skill levels.

“Last year GolfSixes League enjoyed tremendous success in the United Kingdom with junior membership figures soaring at the 542 participating golf clubs across England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and it proved equally popular when it launched in Belgium, Germany, Holland, Poland, Spain, Switzerland. We were very excited when the R&A approached us to roll out GolfSixes League in Africa alongside Morocco and, judging by the overwhelmingly positive response we received at our activation days so far, we believe the GolfSixes League will be just as successful in South Africa.”
