Van Deventer sets pace at SA U-15 Challenge

Lanky Liam van Deventer fired a 68 to open up a tidy lead in the first round of the SA U-15 Challenge at Gowrie Farm Golf Estate near Mooiriver in KwaZulu-Natal.

The 13-year-old junior from Benoni Lake Country Club birdied two, three and five but gave back two shots with bogeys at eight and 11. A pair of birdies at 12 and 13 saw Van Deventer surge three shots clear of the chasing pack.

Fellow Ekurhuleni golfer Casey Jarvis returned an even-par 71 to claim a share of the four-way tie in second alongside Jordan Duminy from Southern Cape, Central Gauteng’s Yurav Premlall and Marcus Taylor.

Kieron van Wyk from Central Gauteng overcame a double bogey at five and triple drop at the seventh with a hat-trick of birdies on the back nine to grab a seat on the bus at two over with Gauteng North pair Nathan Trodd and Luhan Bester.

Zwartkop junior Nash de Klerk signed for a 75 to slip into ninth, while Samual Mckenzie from Central Gauteng, Boland’s Cameron Somers and Francois van Rensburg from Limpopo registered a trio of 76s to complete the top 10.
