Van der Merwe on fire in Germany
He was bitterly disappointed with his opening gambit, but South Africa’s Altin van der Merwe is smiling after round two action wrapped in the RB German Junior on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old Durbanville player dropped eight shots in the first round, but stemmed the bleeding with a hat-trick of birdies to sign for a 77.
Starting day two in a tie for 17th, Van der Merwe reversed his fortune with four birdies and an eagle at the par five 15th on his way to a two-under-par 70.
The Western Province junior finished in third at three over 147 and lags just two shots off the pace from 36-hole leader Marcus Helligkilde from Denmark.
The Dane carded rounds of 73 and 72 for a slender one stroke lead over Sweden’s Felix Alnefelt, who doubled up on 73s.
Van der Merwe qualified for the invitation-only Global Junior Golf Tour event by way of winning the Boys Division in the Curro South African Juniors International (SAJI) in March.
