Val Holland reports on Round One in Argentina
Email from SA Coach Val Holland on her impressions of the South African Team on Day 1 of the World Amateur Team Championships being played in Buenos Aires.
Hi to all back home,
Well what a day for South Africa. We had a slow but pretty solid start with a few missed putts and then the team pulled together and a few birdies started to drop. A great start in tied 4th position on –2 with the USA leading on -8 and Argentina and France on -4. The weather conditions are perfect, hot and very little wind, the Buenos course definitely seems to be the tougher of the 2 courses but our favorite so we hoping to move a lot closer to the USA by the end of tomorrow.
Best individual is -5 from France and 2 players on -4 both from USA and one on -3 and then Kelli is with 6 or so players on -2 and in tied 5th position. Kim finished level and in tied 21st with Connie shooting +2 and in tied 46th. Connie played very well through out the round, one or 2 unlucky breaks but she fought all the way and for her first event as a Senior and on the big stage we think she did remarkably well and our Kimbo just seems to keep playing more and more solid so watch this space after tomorrows round. Kelli is playing extremely well and just left a few putts out on the course which she reckons she will collect tomorrow. So from a very excited SA Team, please keep thinking our putts in and we look forward to chatting to you all tomorrow after our round.
Best shots of the day;
Kelli – very difficult to choose but the 6th hole after dropping on 5 she produced a 2nd shot into the green with a PW to “give me” and brought her back to level.
Connie – Birdie Putt from off the back of the 6th green after a unlucky bounce from her approach shot into the green which left her a sloping downhill putt.
Kim – 15th hole 200 meters to the flag over water and from light rough and waited to see what Connie had made and between Sandra and Kim they made a decision if Connie makes birdie then she would go for it which she did and hit it to the back of green and just missed eagle.
Ciao or now,
Kelli, Connie, Kim, Sandra & Val
