US leads The Spirit at the half-way stage

WGSA President Erica Lefson reports, “Well there was such a great start to the day. We teed off last on the 10th on another perfect day with a moderate temp (77F) and no wind. The greens have got a bit faster which means in our terms like lightning from some sides.

“The girls started with both dropping shots on the 10th but pulled back to making pars on 11,12,13. We then reached Kim’s favourite holes – and like yesterday she had a run of birdies – 13,15,17 and 18. The 18th is a really difficult hole with water at the side and in from of the green and a terrible sloping green. She hit a great shot in to five foot and sank the putt.

“So the girls turned three under and South Africa had now climbed well up the leader board to be 10 under and looking good. But nothing worked for the girls from then on and they had nine pars in a row.Yvette du Plessis

“Dylan birdied the 10th and was on the par five 12th for two again. After Leon’s birdie putt, Dylan gave it a go for eagle – too much of a go and missed the birdie putt back – just for his individual score.

“Pars at the 13th and once again both had birdies at the 14th and Dylan kept up the good work with birdies as the 15th and 17th. So with the three put at 12 he still shot a 32 on the nine and the boys turned 5 under.

“Then the putter went a bit off the heat – with missed birdie opportunities on one and two, Dylan hit a great shot to the par three third which almost holed out ending a foot from the pin – and so a birdie to go six under.

“Then a string of pars and unfortunately on the seventh both played the hole poorly to drop a shot to go five under and that is how they finished. I really thought we would have climbed up the leader board but no such luck.”

In the Individual Birdie and Eagle tally, no eagles so far, but Dylan has eight birdies, Leon five, Kim seven and Yvette two as they head to day three.
