Tuks wins USSA Championship Stroke Play
Matthew Spacy made three eagles on his way to a second round six-under-par 66 that not only won him the Individual Standings title, but help the University of Pretoria to an emphatic victory in the Stroke Play qualifier of this year’s USSA (University Sport South Africa) Championships in Limpopo.
The University of Pretoria won the prestigious universities championship in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and are firm favourites to win their fourth title at the Koro Creek Country Estate.
The Tuks team took a seven shot lead into the second round of the 36-hole qualifier and combined for a second round total of 364 to finish 21 strokes ahead of the Stellenbosch A side, who returned a second round 379.
The Golf School of Excellence Johannesburg team took third on 752.
They will compete in the A-Flight with Stellenbosch A, the Golf School of Excellence Johannesburg and Centurion Academy A.
Meanwhile Spacey beat joint first round leader, Christoff Els from Centurion Academy by one shot to clinch the Individual title. Both players automatically qualify for the 2014 USSA Golf Team that will compete in the Challenge Cup.
In addition to Spacy, skipper Tertius van den Berg and fellow Tuks players Werner van Niekerk, Ryan Lane, Andrew van der Knaap and Marco Loubser also finished inside the top 10 in the Individual Standings.
The Match Play section tees off from 3-5 July, and the format is foursomes and singles.
