Top three for SA at International Teams Qualifier

South Africa claimed a share of third with host nation France in the Qualifying Round of the International Team Mid-Amateur Championship at Golf Du Medoc Resort near Bordeaux on Friday.

Josef Fourie, Graeme Watson and Greg Sheard combined for a 10-over-par 223 to finish four shots behind Sweden and three back from Italy.

Medoc’s Jean-Alban Mortier and Sweden’s Kristian Johansson both navigated the Chateaux Course in even-par 71 to top the Individual Leaderboard, while SA number one Josef Fourie took seventh with a two-over-par 73.

Ekurhuleni’s Watson carded a 74, Western Province’s Sheard returned a 76 and David Muller from Central Gauteng posted the non-counting 78.

“The guys struggled to get going, but they all came back strong over the last nine holes,” said team manager and SAGA Assistant Executive Director, Neil Homann.

The South African quartet will face local club, Medoc, in the first round.

“We are going all out to win all three points up for grabs against Medoc,” Homann said. “Graeme and David will combine in the Foursomes, while Josef and Greg will challenge in the Singles.”
