Top junior Lara Weinstein wins Limpopo champs at Ledgends

Returning two great rounds of 75, 71 (146) on the tough Ledgends course, top SA ranked junior, Lara Weinstein walked away with the 2011 Limpopo Ladies Open played on 18 and 19 June.

Five strokes back was Mpumalanga’s Alana van Greuning, one ahead of Nicole Bekker on 152.

Limpopo President Wally Steenkamp reports

A total of 58 ladies played in the championship and we had very good support from the other Provinces. Thank you Presidents for encouraging them to support us.

The nine and under championship division had 27 entries to start with, but three withdrew. Seven of these entries were Juniors.

Legends is a very long course (5866 mtrs) with lots of bunkers and huge greens. The wind was quite a factor on Saturday, but despite that some good scores were posted.

Sunday started off being very cold but it turned into a very beautiful day as some of the scores show. Hats off to Lara for two superb rounds, and becoming our 2011 Open Champion.

The Closed Champion was won by Limpopo stalwart Desi Earle – a pity she was the only entry from Limpopo in this Division. LynnMarie Nagel is still out of action and Twane Grobler was studying for exams. LynnMarie was not going to miss out though – she helped us with the scoreboard etc. A big thanks for all her help.

The B Division 10-18 stroke play was won by another stalwart, Hentie Clack, and here you can see by Saturday’s scores that the wind was a real factor.

We had a play-off for our Closed Champion in this Division. Tessa Roux from Koro Creek and Yolanda Horn from Kameeldoring had quite a battle, which was eventually won by Yolanda after three play-off holes.

The C Division stableford 19-28 which consisted of mostly Limpopo entries was won by Bev Weijters. As you can see from the scores, the higher the handicaps, the more difficult the course was for the players. She also won the Closed Championship.

The D Division stableford 29-36 was won by Cara Ford, a nine-year old junior. Fantastic!! As you can see from the results both she and Mercedes (both juniors) posted the best scores by far. Unfortunately none of them can play in the SA Girls as their handicaps don’t allow them, but watch out for them next year.

The Closed Campion was Tanya Motk and again the scores show how difficult the course was for them.

All in all we had a succesful Championship . Our thanks to David Riddle, the Golf Director at Legends and his team, They went out of their way to assist us and afforded us very good rates for the green fees as well as the accommodation. Carts had to be used for the C and D Divisions as there were not enough local Caddies and David also gave a special rate for the Carts.

The club did all the pin placings on both days and provided us with pin distances each day.

Special portable toilets were also provided on the course.

Legends can rate amongst the top Golf Courses as a Championship Course. For the higher handicaps it becomes a bit of a nightmare. I am living proof of that. If ever any of you come this far North, a great challenge awaits you at Legends.
