TGSE and NWU face Tuks Double at USSA Champs
The Golf School of Excellence Johannesburg and North West University 1 will face both teams from the University of Pretoria in the Match Play semi-finals at the annual USSA (University Sport South Africa) at Koro Creek Golf Estate on Thursday.
TGSE 1 and Stellenbosch University 1 drew the foursomes with one win each.
Allan Jones and Vico Kuhn halved their singles, but Ludovic Bax, scored a 4 & 2 victory against Steven Janicki and Tyrone Gibb wrapped up a 4-2 victory for TGSE 1 when he defeated Petrus Loubser 2 & 1.
A win and a halve in the foursomes put NWU 1 in the driver’s seat, but Jonathan Dixon claimed a quick point for the University of Johannesburg 1 when he downed Rikus Vermooten 5 & 3.
However, Eben Zietsman won 3 & 2 to gain back the edge for NWU 1 and Wynand Potgieter drove home a 3.5-2.5 victory for his side when he downed Nicholas Mycroft 3 & 2.
Meanwhile Tuks kept their title defence alive with both teams coming up trumps.
Tuks 1 faced Centurion Academy 1 and the teams were tied 1-1 heading into the singles.
CA 1 took the lead when Driekus Gous defeated Stephen Morrison 3 & 2, but Marco Loubser levelled the match with a 2 & 1 result against Christoff Els.
Reinhardt Blaauw held off Donovan de Vries to win 1-up and Andrew van der Knaap sealed a 4-2 victory for Tuks 1 when he downed Ruan Korb 3 & 1.
Meanwhile the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University had the early upper-hand after a 2 – 0 result in the foursomes, but seemed defenceless against a full assault from Tuks 2 in the singles.
Ryan Wille claimed first blood with a 4 & 2 win against Colin Baldie and Zabastian de Jager squared the match with a 3 & 1 result against Pieter Rademeyer.
Ryan Lane put Tuks 1 defeated Hando Brophy 4 & 2 and David Nortje drove the nail in NNMU 1’s coffin when he downed Michael Maybury 2-up to secure a 4-2 victory for the side.
The first A-Flight semi-final will see Tuks 1 will face off against TGSE 1, while Tuks 2 will do battle with NMU 1.
In the B-Flight, Varsity College 1 will come up against Cape Peninsula University of Technology 1, who nearly scored a whitewash against the Stellenbosch University 2.
Having won both their foursomes matches, SAGDB graduate Nesville Croy handed Dain Winsnes an 8 & 7 beating. Inspired by his performance, Gerhard Hough and Dwayne Basson won both their games to 5-1 triumph for CPUT.
In the other semi-final, Centurion Academy 2 will face the Golf School of Excellence Pretoria, who were forced into extra time after drawing 3-3 with the University of Cape Town 1.
The match was decided in a play-off, with TGSE 2 coming up trumps.
