Telfer takes control at KZN Junior Champs
Just 10 days after she defeated SA number one Kim Williams for the Mpumalanga Championship title, Kaleigh Telfer has taken a three shot lead in the KwaZulu-Natal Junior Championship at Selborne Golf Club.
The 15-year-old Bryanston golfer opened with a 74 and navigated the championship layout in 75 strokes in the second round to set the target at nine-over-par 149.
Telfer has a three shot cushion on local favourite Michaela Fletcher from Pietermaritzburg, who slipped into second with rounds of 77 and 75.
Former Nomads SA Girls Champion and 2012 Sanlam Cancer Challenge winner Fletcher is the lone host province representative in the top five.
Paarl golfer Bianca Lohbauer moved into third place on 155 with rounds of 76 and 79, while Shawnelle de Lange from Goldfields West took fourth on 158 after carding rounds of 84 and 81 and Glenvista’s Symone Henriques returned rounds of 84 and 81 to finish alone in fifth on 165.
Following the championship Fletcher – who is playing in her last junior golf championship – will imparting her skills alongside Womens Golf South Africa’s Elite Squad coaches, Val Holland and Anna Becker at a Future Champions Junior Clinic at the Lynton Hall Driving Range on Sunday, 1 December.
The clinic will cover the basics of the short game, including putting, chipping and bunker play, practice drills and each participant will receive a practice programme in hard copy to take away after assessment and skills testing.
The clinic is free of charge, will run from 08h00 to 13h00 and is suitable for players all handicaps born in 1995 or later.
