Telfer sights EP double
Just one day after she edged out Zethu Myeki from Border in extra time for the Stroke Play title, Kaleigh Telfer from Gauteng is targeting the double in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality Eastern Province Championships at Humewood Golf Club.
On Sunday morning, Myeki opened with a four-under-par 70 to lead the field at the links layout in Port Elizabeth.
She had a one shot advantage over GolfRSA Elite Squad member Telfer, however, a 72 from Telfer and a 73 from Myeki in the final round saw the pair tie at five under 143 in regulation play.
“We returned to the par-four first for the play-off,” Telfer said.
“We both hit solid drives down the fairway and finished short of the green with our approaches. Zethu chipped to 10 feet, but I went with the putter and lagged it to a couple of inches from the pin. When Zethu’s par putt just missed, I tapped in for the win.
“It was very windy on the weekend and this course is really shows its teeth in the wind. We had some tough par four’s into the wind to negotiate in the first round and over the front nine in the final round, but luckily the wind calmed down quite a bit over the last nine holes.
“I hit same really good tee shots and irons on the back nine to set up four birdies, but a bogey at the 18th cost me the outright win. It was great to tie Zethu, though, and secure a one-two finish for the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation in Port Elizabeth.”
Telfer had a first round bye in the Match Play Championship on Monday morning and went up against Minette Olivier from Uitenhage in the second round. She won the match 3 & 1 to reach the semi-final, where she will face Laila Hrindova from Slovakia.
Hrindova, who also sat out the first round, beat Swiss amateur Chloe Grande 3/2 to advance.
The other semi-final will be contested by Tara Griebenow from Western Province and Border’s Demi Flanagan. Griebenow defeated Ladina Semadeni – another Swiss amateur attending the KeNako Academy in George – 1-up in the first round, while Flanagan eliminated Bianca Wernich from Boland at the 20th hole.
