Telfer on fire in George

Gauteng’s Kaleigh Telfer will chase her second provincial title this season after taking a sublime lead in the Southern Cape Championship at George Golf Club on Saturday.

Telfer from Bryanston Country Club fired a first round six under 66 to open up a two shot lead on number one ranked Ivanna Samu from Gauteng and Border’s Zethu Myeki.

In the second round, the reigning Free State and Northern Cape champion reeled in a career first albatross at the par-five second and added birdies at five, six, 11 and 15 to stretch her advantage to seven strokes.

Telfer leads on 11-under-par 133, with Samu second on four under 140 after adding a 72.

Reigning Border champion Myeki returned a 78 to finish in third alongside Gauteng’s Shawnelle de Lange, who joined the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation player on two over 146 with rounds of 72 and a 74.

Meanwhile Valda Ford from Ruimsig Country Club opened with an 83 to lead the B-Division by two strokes from Country Club Johannesburg’s Michelle Witts-Hewinson.
