Telfer edges ahead at Boland Junior Champs

A wet course and a steady downpour at Kuils River Golf Club had little effect on Bryanston’s Kaleigh Telfer, who hit the front at the Boland Junior Championship with an opening two-under-par 70 on Wednesday.

The 15-year-old from Bryanston leads by one from the country’s top ranked junior Bianca Theron and is three ahead of fellow Boland golfer, Bianca Lohbauer.

Cassidy Williams, who carded a 75 to Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North and the Western Province’s Cara Gorlei, further strengthens the local challenge from joint fifth.

A confident Telfer teed off her 2014 season with the confidence of reeling in two victories late last year. The teenager defeated the country’s number one ranked senior Kim Williams for the Mpumalanga Championship title in November and a fortnight later, closed out the season with victory at the KwaZulu-Natal Junior Championship at Selborne Golf Club.

Telfer picked up an early birdie at the par-five second, but lost the advantage with a bogey at the fourth.

However, she dipped to two under with a pair of birdies before the turn, and although she dropped shots at the tough par-four 10th and the 12th, Telfer stemmed the bleeding with a birdie at the par-five 14th and put the seal on a solid performance with a birdie at the par-five 18th.

With no rain forecast for Thursday’s second round, Telfer will undoubtedly pull out all the stops to secure her third title in as many months, but she can expect Theron and Lohbauer to launch a spirited attack to keep the coveted trophy at home.

Dara Steingaszner leads the B-Division for 10-18 handicaps after an opening 79.

The Erinvale golfer is three clear of Bryanston’s Kaiyuree Moodley and five ahead of Cara Ford from Ruimsig.

Royal Cape’s La-Eeqah Adams is the early pacesetter in the C-Division after accumulating 40 points in the Stableford competition. Aaliyah Abrahams from Rondebosch moved into second with 37 points, three ahead of Devonvale’s Megan Gempies.
