Team SA (Silent Assassins) takes on the young New Zealand side on the first day of the Astor Trophy being played at Fairhaven Golf Club in Lancashire this week. The team is, back row, Tiffany Avern-Taplin, Henriëtte Frylinck and Bertine Strauss and seated, Kim Williams, Sandra Winter and Iliska Verwey.
The foursomes pairings teeing off at 08h00 this morning are Bertine Strauss and Henriëtte Frylinck as the second pair and Kim Williams and Iliska Verwey at number one. This afternoon Tiffany Avern-Taplin joins the team as they contest the five singles matches.
Report on the final practice day yesterday from coach Val Holland:
“Well believe it or not we woke up to the most beautiful summer day 25 degrees, sun and not a breath of wind, the shorts came out and off we went.
“After our gym warm up we went into our final practice round which was foursomes, all went well. We will be teeing off at 08h00 tomorrow morning against New Zealand. We are first off and opening the tournament with Bertine and Hetta at number two and Kim and Iliska at number one. The stats are interesting – the average age of our team is 22 and that is the age of the oldest player in the tournament. New Zealand has two 14 year olds and a 16 year old.
“We had the opening ceremony and flag raising this evening which was very nice. The English Folk are really looking after us – we have members caddying and they all very excited and routing for team SA (Silent Assassins).
“Well I guess that is it from us in a Sunny UK for now, weather prediction for tomorrow…14 degrees and raining.”
