Strydom moves in at Argentina Stroke Play
South Africa’s number one ranked Tristen Strydom carded a one-under-par 69 in the second round of the Argentine Stroke Play Championship to move into the top 12 at Tortugas Country Club.
Strydom tied for 12th on even-par 140, and lags four strokes behind 36-hole pacesetter, Jarryd Felton from Australia.
Felton carded successive rounds of 68 for a one stroke lead on 136 over Argentina’s Lezcano Nicolas and Jose Chon, compatriots Cameron Davis and Cory Crawford and Frenchman Edgar Catherine.
The Ekurhuleni golfer collected a two pair of birdies – a brace on each nine – to offset bogeys at the second, seventh and 12th holes.
“Tristen is hitting the ball unbelievable well, and if he gets in going, he can definitely go low in the next two rounds,” said national coach Llewellyn van Leeuwen.
Gauteng North’s Jason Smith carded a 73 to tie for 18th on 143, while Gerlou Roux, who led the South African standings with opening 69, slipped to a tie for 23rd on 144 after signing for a 75.
Hendrikus Stoop shares 32nd on 147 after rounds of 73 and 74.
“Jason started hitting the ball really well towards the end of his round, and had a good post round practice and I expect him to bounce back,” Van Lleeuwen said.
“Sometimes you can hit a bad tee shot and still make birdie, but today Gerlou veered slightly left with three tee shots and was severely punished.
“Hendrikus is looking good in all departments and some good form is just around the corner.”
Following the Argentine Stroke Play Championship, the quartet will line up in the Southern Cross Invitational against top international teams from the host nation, Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Ireland and Portugal at the Nordelta Golf Club in Tigre from 26-29 March.
