Strydom cracks top 10 in Argentina
Less than a month ago, Ekurhuleni’s Tristen Strydom was worried that a swing problem would affect his campaign in the Southern Cross Invitational in Argentina, but after three rounds of the Argentine Stroke Play Championship, the country’s top ranked amateur is in great shape.
Strydom was joint 12th after rounds of 71 and 69 and moved into the tie for seventh at the Tortugas Country Club with another one-over-par 71 in round three.
The South African lags five strokes behind Frenchman Edgar Catherine, who carded rounds of 68, 69 and 69 to take pole position at four under 206.
Catherine leads by one from 36-hole pacesetter, Jarryd Felton from Australia.
After a disappointing 75 in the second round, Western Province’s Gerlou Roux rebounded with an even-par 70 to vault to 14th on four over 214, but Gauteng North pair Jason Smith and Hendrikus Stoop both had a long day at the office.
Former SA Stroke Play champion Smith signed for an 82 to finish on 15-over-par 225, while Stoop from Centurion carded a 79 to finish a further stroke adrift.
The South African quartet are campaigning in the Argentine Stroke Play Championship as part of their preparation for the Southern Cross Invitational next week.
The local heroes will fly the flag against top international teams from the host nation, Australia, Canada, Chile, France, Ireland and Portugal at the Nordelta Golf Club in Tigre from 26-29 March.
