4 April 2018 – Two new faces emerged at the top of a packed leaderboard after third-round action wrapped up in the Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play Championship on Wednesday.
Cole Stevens from Central Gauteng and North West junior Christiaan Burke moved into pole position eight-under 208 at Woodhill Country Club after posting rounds of three-under-par 69.
Stevens made a double bogey start and dropped another shot at the sixth, but the Parkview junior rallied with birdies at seven and nine to turn one over. A pair of birdies at 14 and 15 got Stevens into red numbers and signed off with back-to-back birdies to edge into the joint lead.
Burke reeled in birdies at one and eight and further gains at 14 and 15 moved him clear of the field at nine-under, however, the Potchefstroom golfer lost the outright lead when he bogeyed the short 17th.
Stevens and Burke will carry a slender one shot lead into this afternoon’s final round over the reigning Sanlam SA Amateur champion Deon Germishuys and 2017 winner Christo Lamprecht.
Germishuys from Western Province moved up the leaderboard courtesy of a bogey-free 66, while first round leader Lamprecht from Southern Cape posted 71.
Defending champion Jayden Schaper stumbled early with a bogey at the second and surrendered his overnight lead with another pair at seven and eight. The Ebotse golfer dropped further shots at 13 and 14, but limited the damage to a round of 73 with three birdies over the last four holes.
Schaper will start the final round two off the pace in joint fifth alongside Werner Deyzel and Barend Botha. Deyzel from Gauteng North carded 69 and Botha from Southern Cape shot 70.
