Southern Cape players dominate 1st round of Kingswood SA Womens Mid Am
GEORGE – On a windless, cloudy day, conditions were perfect for the first round of the Kingswood SA Women’s Mid Amateur Championship. Home players appeared to have a considerable advantage as defending champion, Sandra Winter, finished just two over par to close on 74 followed closely by another Southern Cape player, Sonja Bland on 77. However they are being chased by Limpopo player, Desire Geldenhuys and Kate Brett-Castle from KZN, both on 78.
Playing in the “B” Division, 10 handicapper Esme Orr, also a Southern Cape player, caused some consternation as she was leading the Championship after 9 holes on 2 under par. This included an eagle on the first hole. However with a back 9 of 42 she finished with a 77, a full 6 shots ahead of Western Province player, Linda Venter. Esme’s 77 included an unfortunate penalty when she forgot that there were no preferred lies, and marked and lifted her ball in play.
Isobel Cocks from Border, Erica Taljaard, Eastern Cape and Tanya Lightley from Southern Cape are currently sharing honours in the “C” Stableford Division with 37 points each.
