Southern Cape looks to promotion back to the A Division

Pictured here is Southern Cape mascot Charlie Bland with his team mates Sandra Winter, Nicole Loesch, Iliska Verwey and Monique Smit. This team hopes to win the encounter against Western Province B tomorrow and gain promotion to the A Inter-Provincial when the event is played at Johannesburg Country Club next August.

Top seeded Gauteng North lost only one game in their tie against Western Province A today in the Pick n Pay SA Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship being played at the spectacular George golf course in the Southern Cape. Carrie Park and Nobuhle Dlamini lost their foursomes match against Kelly Erasmus and Cara Gorlei but the Northerners won the balance of their games to take the points.

In the Gauteng/Border contest, Lynne Behagg had to concede both foursomes and singles matches due to illness and after Leanke Vlok recorded a good half against Lara Weinstein, the Gautengers won the remainder of their games for full points.

KwaZulu Natal recorded a clean sweep against Free State and are at the top of Section Two with full points and Gauteng B picked up two points with a win over North West.

In the B Inter-Provincial, Southern Cape only lost one match against Mpumalanga when Bonnie Henrico won her tie 3/1 against Sandra Winter. The host province meets Western Province B, also on full points, to decide which team will gain promotion to the A Inter-Provincial in 2012.

There were a couple of unexpected results – 13-year old Eleonora Galletti, playing with Lora Assad gave their North West opponents a shock when they finished all square with the experienced Elru Botha and Nicole Becker. And this afternoon, Eleonora chipped in at the 18th to halve her match with Shawnelle de Lange. Gauteng North’s Nobuhle Dlamini and Carrie Park were beaten 2 up by WP Juniors, Cara Gorlei and Kelly Erasmus and perhaps the biggest upset of the morning was the defeat of Gauteng’s Lara Weinstein and Michelle Leigh by Olivia le Roux and Annabel Heward from Boland by 2/1.

The final round of the championship will be played tomorrow when top seed Gauteng North meets neighbour Gauteng to claim the 2011 Inter-Provincial Championship. The Daisies have won the event for the last four years and hope up up their fifth consecutive championship in George tomorrow.
