Southern Cape girls take the honours at Mid-Amateur Championship
Kingswood member Sandra Winter defended her title in true style. With a magnificent closing round of two under par 70, the lowest score of the tournament, Sandra came in 8 shots ahead of Kate Brett-Castle from Kloof Golf Club, who despite two birdies in her last round, just couldn’t catch the Champion and finished on 227. Fancourt member Sonja Bland played steadily but a couple of errors left her in third place on 232 followed one shot behind by Gilly Tebbutt from Rondebosch on 233.
In the “B” Division, George Golf Club member Esme Orr went into the final round with an eleven shot lead from her nearest rival Lynn Slogrove from Humewood. Esme continued to play solid golf and took the the title on 241, a full 10 shots ahead of Lynn who finished on 251. Last year’s winner, Lenza de Jager from Pretoria came third on 256.
The “C” Division lead swung back and forth all day and in the end Lorraine Smit from Krugersdorp clinched the title with 104 points. There was a count-out for 2nd place on 102 with Tersia Swanapoel from Rusternburg taking the honours from Steph Donaldson from Port Elizabeth. Another count-out for third place saw Ria Louw from Paarl beating Karen Gird from Rustenburg on 101.
Twelve out of thirteen provinces were represented at this year’s event and next year the SA Womens Mid Amateur Championship will be moving to Gracelands in Mpumalanga where we are sure the entries will be swelled by the girls from the north.
