South African Trio win the Regional All Africa Challenge Trophy

The South African trio of Ashleigh Holmes, Pam Hayward and Marne Roos combined well to win the 2009 Regional All African Challenge Trophy this week. The event was played at the scenic 71 par Nkonyeni Golf Estate at Manzini, Swaziland and was contested by Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.

With two of the three scores to count in each round, the SA girls managed to win the event by 27 strokes on 438, from Swaziland on 465 and Namibia on 483. The Swazi team was headed by recent SA Match Play Champion Nobuhle Dlamini while Namibia’s top player was Bonita Bredenhann, also playing regularly in South Africa.

Pam Hayward was the most consistent in the winning team, shooting 72, 72 and 77 (221). Marne Roos had two good rounds, 73, 78, 73 (224), and Ashleigh Holmes scored 78, 72, 76, (226).

This biennial tournament always leads up to the All African Challenge Trophy played the following year. In October 2010, teams from most of the Africa states will head off to Nigeria to contest the All Africa Challenge Trophy currently held by South Africa after the team’s victory in Egypt in January 2008.
