South African players take top honours in Botswana Ladies Open

Bertine Strauss (pictured) on her summer break from the University of Texas, won the Botswana Ladies Open played over 36 holes at the Gabarone Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday.

She carded 150 (77, 73), two strokes ahead of Kim Williams 152 (79, 73) and Lejan Lewthwaite 152 (78, 74) tied runners-up.

The Botswana Ladies Open was played at Gabarone Golf Club and four South African players participated in this 36-hole Stroke play Championship.

On the first day, all the players struggled on the dry and bumpy greens. However Naminia’s Bonita Bredenhann did not appear to have a problem and posted a level par score.

The first cold front reached Botswana on Saturday and with a fairly strong wind, conditions were quite tough. On the second day, in calmer conditins it remained very cold and the players managed to deal somewhat better with the inconsistent greens.

Top ranked Kim Williams, said “It’s been almost impossible to putt with confidence on these greens, and it was a relief when the ball hit the bottom of the hole!”

The players return to South African on Monday.
