South African juniors visit Jakarta
A South African junior team left yesterday to compete in the Jakarta World Junior Championships in Indonesia. The team, pictured, is Karebo Mokoena, David Meyers, Karen Olivant (Manager), Eleonora Galletti and Bianca Theron.
Bianca, on her second visit to this championship, will play in the 15 to 17 age group (Class A). Her home club is Kuils River. Eleonora from RJ & K participates in the 13 – 14 age group (Class B). The two will also contest the team event in which South Africa has done well in previous years.
For the second year, two boys travelled with the girls. Both scratch golfers, Karebo plays out of Maccauvlei while David is from Dainfern.
The event takes place at the Damai Indah Golf, Pik Course in Jakarta from 5 to 8 June.
This is the fifth year that South Africa has participated in this event. In 2008, Monique Smit won in Class A and she and Lara won the team event and the Governor’s Trophy which they brought back to SA. This trophy is now presented annually to the individual winner at the 72 Hole Teams Championship – this year to Kim Williams.
In 2009, Bertine Strauss tied in first place but lost in a play-off and together with Lara, was second in the team event.
In 2010, Connie Chen was runner-up in the Class A and she and Kirsten Campbell were runners-up in the team event.
In 2011, Lara Weinstein was third in the A Class and she and Bianca Theron were runners-up in the team event.
