Seniors sweep Madalas ahead of Indwe Senior Open
The SA Senior side claimed their fourth consecutive victory in the South African Madala Challenge at Pecanwood in the North West Province on Tuesday.
The curtain-raiser for the annual Indwe Risk Services South African Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship has grown in popularity over the past few years and provides the perfect warm-up for 16 of the country’s top seniors ahead of their flagship event.
The two eight-man teams went head-to-head at the Jack Nicklaus-designed championship layout, which will also host the A-Division of this year’s Senior Open battle.
The SA Seniors won two games and halved two against the Madalas to win the Foursomes 3 – 1 on Monday and, taking a two point edge into the Singles, the Seniors never let up and sealed a 7.5 – 4.5 victory.
Both teams are selected off the Senior Rankings. The SA Seniors team comprised players over 50, while the Madalas are players over 55.
Senior Golf chairman, Chris Delport, said the Madala Challenge is hugely popular with the players and spectators alike.
“The teams always enjoy the camaraderie and the chance to flex their muscles before the main event, while it’s a lot of fun for the spectators to watch to guys face off each year,” he said.
“Off course, it will be every man for himself when the first round of the Indwe Risk Services South African Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship tees off tomorrow.”
The A-Division will be contested at Pecanwood Country Club, while nearby Magaliesburg Golf Club will host the B-Division.
