Sanlam celebrates 25 years of working together for hope
The Sanlam Cancer Challenge, South African golf’s greatest contribution to the fight against cancer, celebrates a 25-year partnership with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) and the country’s passionate amateur golfers this year, and with a host of new prizes and incentives on offer.
As one of the longest running partnerships in the history of South African sport, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge annually brings together 35 000 amateur golfers from around the country who help to raise millions for cancer research and treatment.
Last year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge raised a record R4 003 969.12 for CANSA.
Ernie Els is a proud Champion of Hope for the tournament and traditionally treats the national winners to a unique Ernie Els Experience in which they play a round of golf at Oubaai Golf Estate, enjoy an exclusive tour of the Ernie Els wine farm, and have a meal at The Big Easy Restaurant in Stellenbosch.
This year, as part of the 25th Anniversary, Els will be increasing his involvement in the competition by offering prizes from his Ernie Els Collection, including golf shirts, golf caps and towels.
There are added incentives for the golf clubs as well.
For every R25 000 that a club raises, it will automatically gain one entry into the Lucky Draw. The draw will be done upon conclusion of the Club Competitions, and the winning club will be given an all-expenses paid invitation for a fourball to play in the Delegates’ Competition which runs concurrently with the Sanlam Cancer Challenge National Final at Sun City, and which features sports stars and celebrities in the field.
There will also be a new competition this year for non-handicapped golfers.
As part of the ongoing goal to make the Sanlam Cancer Challenge accessible to all golfers and raise as much money for CANSA as possible, clubs who have available spots in their Club Competition draw can fill them with golfers who do not have an official handicap. They will play their own competition, and the leading man and woman will go into a lucky draw. Four players drawn will win an all-expenses paid trip to play in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge National Final Delegates’ Competition.
“Twenty-five years is an incredible achievement in terms of a partnership and we are extremely proud of the journey we have walked with CANSA and the difference we have helped to make,” said Sanlam Sponsorship Manager Gary van Loggerenberg.
“This year we hope to make every golfer out there who supports this competition realise how important they are to its success and the work of CANSA.”
Registration for the nationwide Club Competitions opened this month. Golfers around South Africa will begin qualifying at their various Club Competitions to make it through to the Regional Finals and then ultimately the National Final to be played on 9-10 October on the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Club courses at Sun City.
Registrations are now open at www.sanlamcancerchallenge.co.za for the 2017 series. For more information go to www.sanlamcancerchallenge.co.za
