Samu takes pole position at Nomads SA Girls

Ivanna Samu is just 18 holes away from realising one of her major goals for 2014 after she took control in the second round of the prestigious Nomads SA Girls Championship in Orkney Golf Club on Monday.

The recent Gauteng Championship winner carded an even-par 72 to pull two strokes clear of defending champion, Ji Sun Kang.

Samu knocked in a birdie putt at the par-five ninth to take the sting off bogeys second, fifth, seventh and eighth holes and turn in three over. She rallied with birdies at the 13th, 15th and 18th to top the leaderboard at three-over-par 147.

Kang notched three birdies to offset three bogeys, but double bogeys at the par-five 10th and par-four 13th saw the Western Province golfer slip to second after a disappointing 75.

Boland’s Bianca Theron shaved two shots off her opening 76 to vault to third on six over 150 and Danielle du Toit from Gauteng North also made a strong move with a 75 to finish alone in fourth on eight over.

Overnight leader Cara Gorlei from Western Province signed for a costly 80 and fell to joint sixth at eight over 152 to join Gauteng North’s Carrie Park and Cara Contomathios from Gauteng, who carded respective rounds of 76 and 72.

Meanwhile 13-year-old Kajyuree Moodley from Gauteng held on to the B-Division lead with a 77 in the second round.

Moodley leads on 158 and is six strokes clear of Zilke Bal from Boland, who carded an 80.

Mpumalanga’s Danel Bieldt, who returned an 85, finished nine shots off the pace.

The C- and D-Division 36-Hole Stableford competition also got underway on Monday.

Local favourite Mandie Badenhorst scored 41 points and the North West player leads the C-Division by five points from Pheletso Mtembu from Central.

Lene Kruger from Limpopo also scored 41 points in the D-Division and will take a six point lead over Danelle van der Westhuizen from Boland into the second round.
