Samu set sights on KZN title

Gauteng teenager Ivanna Samu has put herself in the ideal position to notch her sixth victory this season after taking a comprehensive lead in the KZN Junior Championship on Friday.

Just a week after the reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur champion claimed a one stroke victory in the Mpumalanga Championship, the 16-year-old carried her hot form to a three stroke lead at the 36-hole mark at Selborne Country Club.

Last year Kaleigh Telfer ended the 2013 season on a high note when she claimed back-to-back titles in the Mpumalanga Championship and the KZN Junior Championship. However, the Bryanston golfer was denied successive victories in Mpumalanga when Samu carded rounds of 71, 78 and 68 at Middelburg Country Club to triumph by one stroke.

Telfer got her title defence at the KZN Junior Championship underway with an opening 71 and shared the first round lead with Mount Edgecombe’s Courtenay James.

However, Samu once again snatched pole position with a blistering five-under-par 67 in the second round. The Ruimsig golfer leads on three under 141, while Telfer returned a 73 to finish on even-par 144.

Chiara Contamathios from Modderfontein moved to third on 148 with rounds of 72 and 76.
