Samu in early control at Nomads SA Rose Bowl
South Africa’s top ranked Ivanna Samu took the 36-hole lead in the Nomads SA Girl’s Rose Bowl Championship on Monday and heads up a strong Gauteng challenge at Paarl Golf Club.
The reigning Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur champion opened with a one over 73 and started the second round one stroke behind fellow Gauteng golfer Natasha Carlsson.
Samu overcame a double bogey at the second and bogey at the third with three birdies for an even-par 72 and pole position in the Championship Division at one-over-par 145.
The 17-year-old Ruimsig golfer is chasing her third title this season after victories in the Gauteng North Junior Girls’ Open Championship and North West Championship.
Samu leads by two from fellow Gauteng player, Chiara Contomathios, who returned rounds of 74 and 73.
Carlsson carded a 78 to finish five strokes adrift and in a tie for third with Gauteng North’s Catherine Lau, who registered rounds of 79 and 71.
Yet another Gauteng player, Kaleigh Telfer, finished in fifth at seven over with rounds of 75 and 76.
Elsune Roode from KwaZulu-Natal took the lead in the Silver Division for 10-18 handicaps.
Roode carded rounds of 79 and 80 to finish on 15 over and a 10 shot cushion over Western Province’s Kaylah Williams.
Noluthando Mdanda from Gauteng and Nadia van der Westhuizen share third on 28 over.
Local player, Andrea van Dyk, leads the Bronze Division for 19-25 handicaps on 41 points.
The Boland player has a six point edge over Naeemah Adams from Western Province and fellow Boland golfer, Leone van der Westhuizen.
