SAGDB’s Galant forges to front at Fish River

The Western Province’s Tristan Galant felt right at home in the swirling South-Westerly what whipped around the layout at the Fish River Sun Country Club and forged his way to the 36-hole lead of the Nomads South African U-13 Championship with an outstanding even par 73.

The SAGDB learner plotted a course that included 10 pars, four birdies and four bogeys around the challenging Gary Player design to finish on two-over-par 148.

The 11-year-old is three shots clear of Boland junior, Eben Spangenberg, who came home in 77 strokes, while Ekurhuleni’s Jayden Schaper carded a 74 to finish six shots adrift.

Overnight leader Cole Stevens from Parkview carded an 80 to slip to a tie for fourth on seven over alongside Randpark’s Alex van der Merwe, who returned a 76.

Kaiyuree Moodley was the top finisher among the girls in the field.

The 11-year-old Bryanston golfer improved by six shots on her opening 83 and her second 77 lifted her to joint 14th on 14-over-par 160 with Martin Vorster from Mossel Bay and Ruhan Oosthuizen from Centurion, who both signed for 77.

In the team competition, first round leaders Central Gauteng kept ahead with the contributions from Cole, Moodley, Van der Merwe, a 77 van Kieron van Wyk and Kajal Mistry’s 85.

The side leads by 11 shots from Ekurhuleni and is 21 shots clear of third-placed Southern Cape.
