SAGA Juniors stay on top at Challenge Cup
The South African Golf Association Junior side kept their title defence on track at the Challenge Cup Teams Tournament, while Central Gauteng and Gauteng North traded places in the log and Western Province rebounded from three successive losses in Thursday’s fourth round at Cullinan Golf Club.
A 6.5 – 5.5 victory kept the SAGA Juniors ahead in the standings, but the side were made to work for their fourth successive conquest by a strong-minded Gauteng North team.
Trailing by two points after two losses and two halves in the foursomes, Gauteng North’s Juan-Pierre Cooper, Divan Marais, Robert Gouws and Ruan Conradie turned the tide by winning the first four singles and put the SAGA Juniors on the back foot.
Luca Filipi stemmed the bleeding when he defeated Ross Sinclair 6 & 5 and Hennie du Plessis claimed another crucial point when he bear Matt Bright 2-up.
Jovan Rebula secured the sixth point with a 7 & 6 triumph against Marthin Scheepers, after Gauteng North’s Leon Scheepers halved the final game against Tristen Strydom.
The defending champions moved to eight points in the standings, but Gauteng North were delegated to third in the standings by Central Gauteng, who pressed a 6.5 – 5.5 result home against the University Sport SA side.
Meanwhile Western Province got off the bottom bench with a 7.5 – 4.5 win against the Presidents Team.
The Cape side won two games and halved another to take a one point lead into the singles.
Kevin Hitge, Dwayne Basson, Robert Bougas and Jonathan Bernard scored the winning runs to put Province in control, while Keagan Beyer and Dylan Raubenheimer added half points each to give the side their first victory in the tournament.
Neswill Croy defeated Darren Dunlop 6 & 5 to add to the Presidents Team tally and Nishalin Nelson beat Joubert van Eeden 3 & 2 for the side’s fourth point.
