SAGA Juniors impress at SA Challenge IPT

The SAGA Juniors share pole position with Central Gauteng after round two of this year’s SA Challenge Inter-Provincial, while Mpumalanga and Boland are the early log leaders at the SA Country Districts Tournament after Tuesday’s second round.

Central Gauteng edged out the President’s team 6.5 – 5.5 at Maccauvlei Golf Club to keep their spot at the top of the log after downing the USSA team on Monday. However, the country’s top juniors a share of the lead on four points and 15.5 games points after defeating the Western Province 8.5 – 3.5.

“The juniors were really impressive today,” said manager Eden Thompson. “We won two of the foursomes matches in the morning and halved the other to take a one point lead into the singles.

“Some of the singles were pretty tight in the lower order, but our three debutants – Ross Sinclair, Luke Trocado and Dylan Naidoo –stepped up under pressure and claimed three straight victories for us to keep the team’s momentum going.”

In the final game, Gauteng North trashed the SA University side 9.5 – 2.5 to move into third on the log.

Mpumalanga took control in the A-Section log, while Boland moved to the top of the B-Section log after both teams completed a successful second round at Upington Golf Club.

Mpumalanga downed KwaZulu-Natal 7.5 – 4.5 to take pole on four points, while Free State & Northern Cape held on to the second spot on game points despite losing to North West 7-5.

Boland drummed Southern Cape 8.5 – 3.5 to keep the top spot, but the Winelands team is just a slender one-and-a-half game points ahead Karoo, who knocked out Limpopo 7.5 – 4.5.

Eastern Province bounced back from a Boland defeat on Monday to move in to third on the log after eliminating Border 8.5 – 3.5.
