SA trio march on at Brabazon Trophy

South African trio Albert Venter, Jovan Rebula and Tristen Strydom survived the cut after the weather-hit second round of the Brabazon Trophy was completed on Friday at the London Golf Club in Kent, England.

Rebula and Venter tied at one-over-par 145 and Strydom made it three South Africans in joint 33rd after completing the second round this morning. The local trio finished 11 shots behind the 36-hole leader, Cameron Davis from Australia.

The start of the second round was delayed by two and a half hours after overnight storms left the Heritage course waterlogged.

George golfer Rebula, who opened with a 74, offset a pair of bogeys with birdies at two, five and eight for a second round 71. Venter from Centurion followed a first round 76 with a 69 that was bookended by bogeys at one and 18 and featured birdies at five, eight, nine, 13 and 15.

Strydom’s first round 71 included three birdies, two bogeys, an eagle at the par five eighth and a double bogey finish.

The Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate player mixed two bogeys with a lone birdie at the eighth to turn in one under, but joined the field scurrying for cover as thunder, lightning and torrential rain swept over the course on Thursday afternoon.

The Ekurhuleni player returned this morning and completed the round with a 74.

Davis leads by two on 10 under 134 from Englishman Jamie Bower, who won the Gauteng North Open and Southern Cape Open during a two-month stint in South Africa earlier this season.

Meanwhile James du Preez from Pretoria Country Club improved 10 shots on an opening 79, but in the end he fell just short of the cut, set at 147.

Fellow Gauteng North player Keegan de Lange, who returned rounds of 76 72, also missed by one shot and Kyle McClatchie from Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate received his marching orders after finishing on 151 with rounds 74 77.

The third round, featuring 62 players, teed off at 14h30 with a two-tee start.
