SA seals top five finish in Argentina

Kyle McClatchie and Aubrey Beckley extended South Africa’s proud history in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup with a top five finish as Agustin Tarigo and Juan Alvarez capture Uruguay’s first victory at the 45th edition of the prestigious event at Los Lagartos Country Club on Sunday.

Tarigo and Alvarez combined for a winning total of eight-under-par 560, while the South African pair took fifth in the 21st International Team Championship on 15 over 589, matching Tristen Strydom and Teaghan Gauche’s feat last year.

Paraguay finished second with a total of 580, France took third on 581 and Spain finished in fourth spot on 582.

Unfortunately the host country’s Marcos Montenegro suffered an injury to his hand and the team could not finish the competition.

“We are extremely happy with winning the Tailhade Cup,” said world number 29 Alvarez. “We have played at this event for many years, always looking forward to winning. We focused on one day at a time, one stroke at a time, and that was essential. We never worked as individual players but as a team.”

Tarigo also on the Individual Competition with a total of six under 278, finished two shots clear of Chilean Cristóbal del Solar four shots ahead of team-mate Alvarez.

Ekurhuleni’s McClatchie produced rounds of 70, 72, 71 and 71 to seal a joint fifth place finish on even-par 284 with Yoon James from Paraguay. Beckley’s rounds of 77, 74, 76 and 78 earned the North West player a share of 44th.

The South African pair will also be flying the flag against players from 22 countries in the 36-hole Stroke Play Qualifier for the 121st FiberCorp Argentine Amateur Championship at the Golf Club Stays on 8 and 9 November.
