SA quartet well placed in India
The four South African juniors competing in the 6th Albatross International Junior Golf Championship are in a strong position following the first round at the Ridge Valley and Canyon courses at the ITC Classic Golf Resort India on Wednesday.
De Lange from Goldfields carded an opening 80 to tie for first with Sasikarn Somboonsub from Thailand in the 15-17 Age Division, while Gauteng North’s Du Toit finished just two strokes off the pace.
Brittney-Fay Berger from KwaZulu-Natal and Boland junior Crystal Beukes both carded rounds of 78 to tie for second in the 13-14 Age Division, and lag five strokes off the pace from Thailands Onkanok Soisuwan.
Berger and Beukes are currently fourth in the team competition on 156, while De Lange and Du Toit combined for 163 to finish seventh overall.
“It was a day of mixed fortunes for the girls,” reported Womens Golf South Africa president, Karen Olivant.
“Although all our players are very well placed, Brittney and Crystal both felt that they made unnecessary mistakes, while Shawnelle must have found every bunker on the course and Daniele felt that she was very solid off the tee but her putting let her down.
“Crystal had a birdie at the ninth and Britt knocked in a birdie putt at the sixth, but unfortunately followed the gain with bogeys at the seventh and eighth.”
