SA players exit early from The Amateur

The five SA players that teed it up at The 2010 Amateur Championship at Muirfield and North Berwick on Monday failed to make it into the match play (Top 64 and ties).

Three players had a realistic chance of making the match play after the first round with Ryan Dreyer probably having the best chance. Dreyer started the second round on 73 (2 over) but still had the easier of the two courses to play. Thabo Maseko and Tyrone Ryan were also on 1 over and 2 over respectively with a round to come on the tougher Muirfield course.

Their closing rounds of 75 (Dreyer), 76 (Maseko) and 78 (Ryan) left the top two finishes Dreyer and Maseko in a tie for 164th place and 5 shots off the cut off score of 143 (1 over). Tyrone Ryan recorded a 79 to finish in a tie for 234th place on 9 over par (152)

Rae Mackie of Gauteng North had the low SA score of the day with a 72 on the North Berwick while Kenny Goosen also played well recording a 74 at the same venue.

Laurie Canter, the current SA Amateur Champion, finished in a tie for 27th when he recorded a second round 73. He will play his first match play round on thursday.
