SA Men have good day at The Spirit

The South Africans are in 6th place on -6 at The Spirit after SA’s men equalled the low round of day two in very cold and windy conditions.

The South Africans Haydn Porteus and Ruan de Smidt are tied in second place with Japan on the men’s leader board at The Spirit being played at Whispering Pines this week. They equalled the low round of day two with a betterball score of 68, to finish four strokes back from leaders Canada at the half-way stage. Canada also recorded 68 and are -12 for the two rounds.

The wind was the dominant factor yesterday and scores were generally higher than those of the first round. Tee off today, day three, will be later at 11:00 due to the expected icy weather.

The South African women did not fare as well as their men and are in 14th position on +2 on the women ‘s leader board. The combined South African men’s and women’s team are sixth on -6.

Kim Williams reports:

“Today was an extremely difficult day. We played 6 hours 20 min! The weather was also terrible today – it was cold and windy. Iliska and I started badly today but then brought it back around the turn and then had silly drops coming in. Hoping tomorrow will go better. The boys are playing nicely.”

In the individual stakes, Argentinian Victoria Tanco had signed for 10 birdies and Belgian Thomas Pieters 9. SA’s Hayden Porteus has 6, Ruan de Smidt 4, Iliska Verwey 4 and Kim Williams 1.
