SA lying 4th after rain delayed second round

Derik FerreiraThe South African amateur golf team, of Derik Ferreira and Adrian Ford, edged up the team leaderboard, to 4th place, tied with the Netherlands, after the conclusion of the rain delayed second round in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup being played at Los Lagartos Country Club, outside Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Ferreira recorded a second round of 72, one over par, to finish with a 36 hole total of 145, three over par. Ford’s 36 hole total is 146, one shot adrift of his team mate due to a second round of 73. The South African team score, in which both scores count, is 291, seven over par, five shots off the pace.

The leaders are hosts Argentina, on a team score of 286, two over par, two shots clear of England. The Argentinean pairing of Jorge Fernandez and Ary Rodriguez shot up the leader board thanks largely to a 67, four under par, score from Rodriquez and a steady par 71 from his team mate. They were the only team to record a team score under par in the second round.

The two South Africans, starting late in the afternoon field, had to endure a one hour delay due to rain, towards the end of the day. They then had to complete their rounds in the early evening. Significantly, both Ferreira and Ford finished with bogeys on the last three holes.

Ferreira’s round included a birdie and bogey, on the front nine, to turn level par, but then recorded two birdies and three bogeys to play the back nine one over and finish on one over par for the round.

Adrian FordFord, on the other hand, recorded three birdies and five bogeys to finish two over par.

In the individual competition, which comprises a full field of players over and above those competing in the International Team Competition, was led by Armando Zarglenga, of Argentina, who also recorded a 67, four under par, in the second round. This put him on 139, three under par, after 36 holes, two shots clear of Matthew Haines, of England.

As a result of no play on Friday, due to heavy rain, the tournament has been reduced to 54 holes, the final round being played today (Sunday).
