SA lifts fourth RAACT title

South Africa celebrated their fourth consecutive victory in the Regional All-Africa Challenge Trophy (RAACT) with another strong performance in the final round at Centurion Country Club on Thursday.

The defending champions finished 41 strokes ahead of Swaziland with an overall winning score of 27-under-par 405.

SA captain Lara Weinstein and Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation member Sylvia Masango produced the two counting scores for the team’s final round five-under-par 139.

Central Gauteng’s Weinstein reeled in five birdies on her way to a three-under-par 69 while Masango from Gauteng North responded with six birdies for a two under 70.

Devonvale’s Bianca Theron carded a closing 74 while Magda Kruger won the individual competition on 16-under-par 200 after posting rounds of 65-64-71 at her home course.

South Africa won the inaugural event held at the Phakalane Golf Estate in Botswana in 2007, and won the subsequent events in 2009 and 2011, held at the Nkonyeni Course in Swaziland and Royal Harare in Zimbabwe respectively.

“This was a team effort and we played for each other,” 18-year-old Weinstein said. “We were determined to follow in the footsteps of our predecessors and we are so proud that we could continue South Africa’s tradition in this event and fly the flag for our country.”
