SA junior girls finish runners-up in Jakaeta

The South African team of Lara Weinstein and Biance Theron return to South African today having been runners-up in the team event at the Jakarta World Junior Championships played in Indonesia this week.

Lara finished third in the Girls A Class Individual Championship, five strokes back from the joint winners. She scored 222 (77, 75, 75). Young Tristen Strydom was fifth in the Boys B Class event on 309 (78, 79, 75, 77), 23 strokes off the lead.

Victor Lange had rounds of 77, 76, 76, 78 to finish on 307, 12 shots back from the winner to finish 11th in the Boys Class A and the fourth members of the group, Bianca Theron, was 12th in the Girls Class B on 236 (81, 78, 77). The winner of this division finished on 214.

Erice Lefson reports, “The last day was played in slightly cooler weather. The objective for all was to climb a few places up the leader board – play the best that we know they all can – and understand the difficult conditions.

“Bianca was the first out – she is really hitting the ball well and will build up more confidence with experience. Again a good first nine but dropping shots on the back nine. She knew she was also playing for the team and kept her concentration until the end.

“Lara was off in the second last group as she was lying fourth. She played perfect golf and was two under after seven but dropped at eight and nine to turn level and had moved up to third place where she finished.

“Tristen is such a capable golfer but lets the game sometimes get the better of him. So once again a few wild shots cost him in his score but he did climb up the ladder and finished in fifth place – and brought back a trophy!

“Victor says his game was off – I think he struggled most with the very different conditions in Jakarta – having never travelled overseas before.”
