SA Junior Girls finish fourth in Jakarta

The SA Team of Bianca Theron and Eleonora Galletti finished in fourth place at the Jakarta World Junior Champioships played in Indonesia this week. Pictured with Bianca on the final day are Gianti (on the left) from Indonesia and Okamura the winner from Japan.

The team championship was won by Japan on 438, Taiwan was runner-up (440), Indonesia third (456) and South Africa fourth (459).

In the individual event, Bianca Theron in Class A finished fifth on 230 (76, 76, 78) while Eleonora Galletti was seventh in Class B on 229 (75, 75, 79).

The two boys from Central Gauteng who accompanied the girls finished in eighth place. David Meyers was 13th in the Individual event in Class A on 315 (84, 74, 81, 76) whole Karabo Mokoena was 10th on 312 (76, 79, 75, 82).

Karen Olivant reported that the final day was again hot and humid with Bianca going off last. “Unfortunately she could not find her rhythm on the tee and often found herself in the rough which was quite thick. She was therefore often having to save par with really good chipping and putting – which she seems to have down to a fine art. She also had a bad start with a double drop but settled down and ended with a respectable 78.

“Eleonora on the other hand had a very early start of 6:30am and seemed to have trouble with her approach shots. She did however end her round with two birdies and a par to finish with a 79. The highlight of her day was making a par on the ninth as she had doubled dropped there on both the previous days.

“After the closing ceremony we left the course with good memories and the players have made lasting friendships.”
