SA in driver’s seat in France

South Africa’s Mid-Amateur team edged out France to win the qualifying round at the prestigious International Team Mid-Amateur Championship at the Golf Du Medoc Resort near Bordeaux.

The mercury hit 35 degrees Celsius at the championship Chateaux Course, but reigning SA Mid-Amateur Stroke Play champion Gerlou Roux was as cool as could be and reeled in six birdies and an eagle to set the tone for the team with an opening 63.

Free State’s Josef Fourie opened with a 70, while Steve Williams and Western Province’s Elton James wilted a little in the hot conditions and returned respective rounds of 74 and 76.

The South African team posted a team total of 207 to win by three strokes from France and Roux won the Individual Competition by five strokes over local hero, Julien Brocas.

Following the qualifier to determine seeding, the teams will face each other in a game of foursomes in the first round and two singles matches in the quarter-finals.
