SA Boys keep the flag flying on Day 3 at The Spirit

Play was delayed by fog for an hour and a quarter on Day Three of The Spirit being played at Whispering Pines, Trinity in Texas this week.

“Lots of coffee and a bit warmer, the girls teed off at 9.39am in perfect weather conditions”, reported Team Manager Erica Lefson after the round.

“Lying in 13th position we were off the10th tee. The greens were running 12 on the stintmeter and this was just a reminder that these greens compete with Augusta. This course, rated number one in Texas, has been rated in the top 50 in America, but never hosted a professional tournament as its owners want it to the the Augusta for amateurs.

“The Girls started the day on – 4, but dropped at 12 followed by a birdie from Yvette at the par three 16th. And then disaster struck! They both had sevens at the 18th. Yvette struggled to the green and Kim, just left of the green, chipped on – the ball almost ran off and she three putted.

“So they were then four over on their first nine and did not really recover. Dropping again at the third and seventh, the girls were in black figures at +2 (six over for the day) and then on the 17th Kim hit a great shot to the eighth par three – to about three foot and sank the putt for her first birdie of the day. With a par at their last hole – the ninth – they finished +1 for the tournament.

“The boys however had a great day and it was a total different story. Dylan started the day with birdies at 10, 11 and 12 (Leon also birdied the 12th). Leon also then birdied the 15th and 17th (Dylan also birdied the 17th). They were burning up the course and were six under after nine.

“Leon then had a great shot into the green on the first and made birdie to take them to seven under par where they remained to finish the day on that score.

“Dylan is a great player, and so supportive of his team mate – it was a privilege watching the two boys today and know that the girls are disappointed that they did not contribute.

“We ended the day still on 13th, but hope that tomorrow brings us to top 10!!!!!”
