Russell leads by two at the halfway stage
Aaron Russell leads by two from Derik Ferreira after the second round of the 72 hole South African Amateur Stroke Play Championship being played at Pearl Valley Golf Estates outside Paarl in the Boland.
Playing in the morning, the 23 year old Westlake Golf Club member recorded a second round score of 73 to give him a 36 hole total of 143, one under par, the only player in the field to break par.
Derik Ferreira, 19 year old Centurion Country Club and Gauteng North player also recorded a second round 73, one over par, to end with a 36 hole total of 145, one over par. Ferreira looked tired after his round. “It is tough in the strong wind, I find it mentally draining, one has to concentrate, be patient and take your chances when they arise,” he explained, echoing the sentiments of most players who played the majestic and magnificently prepared Jack Nicklaus layout in gusting strong winds.
17 year old Yubin Jung (75), from Wanderers Golf Club, Central Gauteng, finished with a 36 hole total of 146. “I am really pleased with my 75, it was a tough up and down round for me,” quipped the likeable player who was born in South Korea. His round included four bogeys, an eagle (on hole 2), two birdies and a triple bogey on hole 4, a treacherous par 3.
Three players finished on 147, three over par, they are JG Claassen (75), Robbie Oosthuizen (74) and Michael Palmer (74).
Of these three players all eyes will be on 35 year old Strand Golf Club’s Robbie Oosthuizen. A self confessed ‘part time’ amateur, getting in about one game a week, recorded a 74 today, and with his 73 of yesterday, is nicely placed to test the younger and more serious players around him. In his youth he won the Central Gauteng Amateur and Boland Stroke Play Open in 1998, being at the top of the leaderboard is not a new experience for him.
Best round of the day went to North West Province player Taymen Erasmus. He recorded 70, two under, this despite having an upset stomach which required a one expedition to the toilet during his remarkable round considering the conditions. He went out in 35 and back in the same score carding four birdies and a double bogey in the process.
The more fancied players all steady themselves for the last 36 holes. Players like Adrian Ford (75), Alexandre Kaleka (75), Leon Knoll (77) and Jake Redman (79) are all within ten shots of the leader.
On conclusion of the round the cut, to 65th place and ties, was set at 164, twenty over par. Sixty eight players made the cut all of whom will now contest the final two rounds. These will be played on Thursday and Friday. There will be a one tee start each day.
