Roux on fire at Argentinean Amateur

South Africa’s Callum Mowat was eliminated, but Gerlou Roux will be hunting a spot in the semi-final of the Argentine Amateur Championship after navigating his way past local heroes Jose Chon and Martin Contini at the Martindale Golf Club in Pilar, Argentina on Friday.

The two South Africans were among just 13 foreigners still standing in the field of 32 first round survivors fighting for a spot in the top 16.

Roux was ranked sixth for the match play and lived up to his billing by handing 59th ranked Lucas Pabon from Argentina a 6&4 drubbing in the first round. The South African number three defeated Chon 2-up and sent Contini packing 4&3 to book his berth in the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile Mowat made his way past 25th seed, Ignacio Garmendia, in the first round but went down 3&2 to Spain’s David Ayra, who partnered Mario Aguilar to victory in the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup.

The Argentine Amateur Championship was first played in 1904 and is the seventh oldest amateur championship in the world.
