North West & EP on the move at SA Mid-Am IPT
North West and Eastern Province were the big movers on day two of the South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial at Middelburg Country Club on Tuesday.
North West beat Ekurhuleni by five points, while Eastern Province held KwaZulu-Natal to a two shot victory and Central Gauteng claimed a narrow one point victory over defending champions, Western Province.
North West claimed a clean sweep in the Foursomes. In spite of a valiant effort from the Ekurhuleni crew in the Singles, North West’s Gary Church, Martin Walsh, Johan Krugel and Douglas McCabe racked up four points and Daniel Jansen van Vuuren squared his game against with Rowan du Preez to hand the team an 8.5 – 3.5 triumph.
Twelve months after earning promotion from the B-Section, Eastern Province kept their winning performance in the big league alive.
The Foursomes ended in a stalemate after both teams reeled in two wins, but EP side had the upper hand in the Singles to beat KwaZulu-Natal 7 – 5.
Johan Vorster, Christian Pienaar, Karl du Preez and Mzuyanda Zingela scored the winning points for Eastern Province, while Michael Holden halved with Keith Forde and Ryno Ferreira halved with Bradley Davison.
North West has two points and 13 game points, with KZN and Eastern Province tied for second and lagging by just half a game point.
Meanwhile Central held the early edge with a 2.5 – 1.5 lead in the morning.
Leon de Lange and Grant Wood took first blood for Central Gauteng, but Western Province’s Ludwig Schreuder, Riaan Lewis, Dirk van der Merwe and Weyers Janse van Rensburg hit back to put Province in the driver’s seat.
In the last two matches, Kevin Sharp beat Cameron Johnston 3&2 and Steve Williams downed Gerlou Roux 4&3 to seal the win for Central.
